Trezor.io/Start® — Starting™ Up Your Device | Trezór®
Welcome! This guide walks you step-by-step through unboxing, initializing, and securing your Trezór® hardware wallet so you can manage crypto with confidence.
Before you start
Make sure you have:
Your Trezór® device and its USB cable.
A clean, malware-free computer or phone and the official trezor.io/start URL typed manually in your browser.
Paper and a pen for writing your recovery seed—never store this digitally.
Time and an uninterrupted space: setup takes about 10–15 minutes.
Security-first tip: Never plug the device into a public or untrusted computer. Always verify the official website address and the device's fingerprint during setup.
Step-by-step setup
Open the box & connect: Remove the device from packaging and connect it to your computer using the supplied cable. The Trezór® screen will power on.
Visit trezor.io/start: Type the address manually into your browser. The official site will guide you to the correct firmware and interface.
Install firmware: If the device needs firmware, follow the on-screen prompts to install it. Firmware ensures the device runs the latest security updates.
Create a new wallet: Choose "Create new" on the web app. The device will generate a recovery seed — a sequence of words — which is the only backup of your wallet.
Write down your recovery seed: Write each word exactly as shown on the device on the provided recovery card or your own paper. Do this offline and in a safe place.
Confirm the seed: The device will ask you to confirm a few words. This verifies you recorded them correctly.
Set a PIN: Choose a PIN on the device. This protects access even when the device is physically connected to a computer.
Finish and verify: Back on the web app, confirm your device status and make a small test transaction to verify everything works end-to-end.
Security guidelines (must read)
Never share your recovery seed. Anyone with the seed can control your funds.
Never type the seed into a computer, phone, or cloud service. Keep it offline on paper or steel backup.
Use a strong PIN and never enter it while someone watches. Consider a passphrase for extra privacy (advanced users only).
Keep firmware updated. Periodically check the official site for firmware updates and follow instructions to update via the web app.
Beware of phishing. Bookmark the authentic https://trezor.io/start page and avoid clicking unknown links or ads.
Recovery seed safety: Loss of the seed means permanent loss of funds. If someone finds the seed, your assets can be drained. Consider multiple geographically separated backups.
Common tasks after setup
Receive crypto: Generate an address in the web app, verify the address on your device display, then share it with the sender.
Send crypto: Create a transaction in the web app, always confirm destination and amounts on the device screen before approving.
Manage accounts: Add or remove crypto accounts using the official interface. Always verify on-device prompts.
Advanced: passphrase: A passphrase acts as an extra word appended to your seed, creating alternative wallets. Use with caution—losing the passphrase equals losing access.
Troubleshooting
Device not recognized: Try a different cable or USB port. Avoid USB hubs. Ensure your OS is up to date.
Firmware install failed: Reboot the device and computer, retry from the official site. If problems persist, contact official support.
Forgot PIN: If you forget your PIN you must recover the wallet using the recovery seed on a new Trezór® or compatible recovery tool.
Damaged seed or lost paper: If you still have device access, create a new wallet and transfer funds to the new wallet, then securely back up the new seed.
FAQ
Do I need the internet to use Trezór®?
The device itself performs signing offline; however a connected computer/phone and the web interface are required to broadcast transactions to the network.
Is my seed stored on the device?
No. The seed is generated on the device and never leaves it. You are responsible for writing it down and keeping it secure.
Can Trezór® be recovered if lost or stolen?
Yes — by using your recovery seed on a new compatible device. But if someone else has your seed, your funds are at risk.
